As a seasonal event which Ivan Kutz took a gamble with back in 2013, Platform 18 has cemented itself as one of the hottest tickets in town, promoting quality parties on a non descript street in Glasgow’s South Side. “West Street is the perfect venue for the sound I want to bring to Glasgow” Ivan told us before the opening party two years ago; “its old railway bridges with high walls will make people feel secure and part of something special.” And it’s arguably that feeling which keeps people coming back, with the sensation of open-air raving still something of a novelty in a city which is regularly under a thick veil of cloud (not that a little bit of rain has ever put anyone off).
Of course, it’s also the music policy which provides Platform 18’s appeal, bringing a dubbier house sound to Glasgow with Ivan felt was missing. Past guests such as Bella Sarris, Rossko and Dewalta have all helped shape the party’s sound, while fellow residents Niz, Forbes and Dave Scott provide the local support.
Ahead of this Saturday’s sold out resident party, we checked in with Ivan to get his Platform 18 Playlist, picking five essential tracks which define the sound of West Street:
1/ DEWALTA - PEOPLE GET READY (All Inn Limited)
“This was dropped by DeWalta when he played a live set at last year’s May party. The sun was shining and this tune just added to the warmth. Smiles all round.”
2/ A GUY CALLED GERALD – HOW LONG IS NOW (Basconi Records)
“I dropped this at the very first Platform 18 when the sun had just about set behind the bridges and darkness was falling; it was the perfect tune to bring us from the day into the night.”
3/ MORITZ PISKE – REAL ONE (Opossum Recordings)
“An oldie dug out from the archives by Niz; perfect day time filler which went down a storm!”
4/ JAMES BARNSLEY - ACID TAMBOURINE (Breakout Audio)
“Funky techno stomper that always hits the spot; I love playing this track!”
5/ BARAC - DOES IT FLOAT (Metereze)
“This hypnotic, slick grooving banger from Barac sums up a lot of our sounds. We like to keep it serious and fresh by bring new sounds from London and Romania which you wouldn't normally hear in Glasgow.”
Platform 18 returns to West Street this Saturday – the event is sold out. Keep up to date with future events via the Platform 18 Facebook.
