Since announcing themselves last year with a fantastically distinct EP on Huntley + Palmers, the somewhat mysterious duo of Hi & Saberhägen have retained our attention ever since. Subsequent releases on Lionoil and more recently, Proibito, find them wandering though a mystic maze of strange sounds, beat-patterns and tempos, making them increasingly difficult to pin-down.
Joining H+P again for an intoxicating Boiler Room set earlier this year - which saw them don face masks to deliver a 45min journey of wild eclecticism - only heightened interest, and tonight they begin a new journey, starting a bi-monthly residency at The Berkeley Suite. Ahead of the party, we asked the duo to pick out some of their current favourites, selecting some truly exquisite belters from the likes of Avalon Emerson and Theo Parrish.
1/ AVALON EMERSON – THE FRONTIER
Hi: "One of my favourite tracks of the year; it starts with the immediacy of a thunderstorm, then opens up with this folky melody on a soft/screechy synth, before relaxing into a hypnotic groove which rides out the track. I put on the Thursday nights at Sneaky Pete’s in Edinburgh and we just got her booked in for Oct 20th. Get hype."
2/ FUXA FT/ SARAH PEACOCK – OUR LIPS ARE SEALED
Saberhägen: "Playing this out loads cause’ it’s class for warm ups."
3/ THEO PARRISH – LIGHTS DOWN LOW
Hi: "I was speaking with Declan (one of Sneaky’s club residents) recently about how there’s always one Theo track you ain’t heard that’s a weapon; he came back to me with 'Lights Down Low' which went right up there with all the other classic Parrish tracks for me. Also great for warm ups."
4/ DJ RASOUL – TRUE SCIENCE
Saberhägen: "Been dancing around in the buff to this over the last few days. All you need to know really."
5/ NEW WORLD MUSIC – INTELLECTUAL THINKING
Hi: "Diggin’ recently for anything that has great programmed drum machine rhythms and jazzy dynamic musicianship. If anyone has a clean copy of this, hmu, will cop for top dolla."
