It would be fair to say that Dance Mania is a bit of a cult label. The seminal Chicago imprint founded by Jesse Saunders in 1985 boasts an extensive back-catalogue of early house and acid classics, recognised for an unashamedly raw and pumping sound. Later forging the way for ghetto house during the 90s, producers like Paul Johnson, DJ Funk and DJ Deeon (whose ‘Freak Like Me’ was re-released by Numbers last year), have gained almost legendary status, sparking amplified sub-genres such as juke.

This Friday (19th), Hullabaloo are dedicating a whole night to Dance Mania with a party at Stereo, inviting one of Glasgow’s most enthusiastic and knowledgeable selectors, Nightwave, to do the honours. With her own productions and label, Heka Trax, she pushes a distinctive and genuinely forward-thinking sound, but the influence of Dance Mania can't be over-stated. Having collaborated with DJ Deeon on her four-alarm belter ‘Hit It’, she’s arguably the most qualified person in Glasgow to represent the label’s legacy, so we asked her to select some of her all time favourites…

“This Dance Mania list was almost an impossible task for me” she tells us. “I could bang on about this all day (no pun intended), but gonna start with a couple DJ Deeon anthems. I have a huge place in my heart for Deeon - musical genius and a wonderful person. Still not over the fact we made a tune together! Big up Deeon always and forever!”

1/ DJ DEEON – FREAK LIKE ME

“This is one of my favourites - can never get enough of it and always play it. Minimal, raw, yet super powerful - real Chicago vibe.”

2/ DJ DEEON - 2 B FREE

“SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE. I WANNA GO BANG. Say no more. Props to Numbers for re-releasing this and ‘House-o-matic’.”

3/ HERCULES - 7 WAYS (CLUB MIX)

“Second Dance Mania release by Marshall Jefferson as Hercules in 86’. Seedy, sexy, hedonistic, slowly burning hypnotising belter.”

4/ VICTOR ROMEO & LEATRICE BROWN – LOVE WILL FIND A WAY

“Legendary track. Epic, emotional acapella intro - proper feel-good goosebumps stuff.”

5/ PAUL JOHNSON – FEEL MY M.F. BASS

“This and ‘Butterfly’ are maybe a bit cliché to some, but Dance Mania is never cliché so they're wrong.”

6/ DEE JAY NEHPETS - NA NA NA

“Great record, but I don't own it sadly. Wicked R Kelly sample in there! That reminds me…I saw him live in Chicago one time and cried lol.”

7/ JAMMIN GERALD - BIGGIE TRAX

“Really nice Biggie edit on the flip of the more famous 'Pump On The Floor' that I play a lot.”

8/ DJ FUNK – WORK THAT BODY

“DJ Funk classic - that guy is something else. And loves the Bucky!”

9/ MARK BERNARD (ROBERT ARMANI) – KICK OFF

“Armani does facemelting ecto-bombs the best.”
