QUICKIE: Esa’s Top5
If you’re after a boost in serotonin there’s only one man you need to see in Glasgow. Time and time again we’ve found ourselves submersed in the sound of Esa Williams aka Mervin Granger and on each occasion, whether it be touring as part of Auntie Flo, getting animated at Highlife or one of his regular appearances at Subculture or Sensu, we’ve emerged nothing short of elated. Weaving deep, grooving House with carnival rhythms and African flare, you’ll be hard pressed to find a more colourful contrast to the leaden skies of Strathclyde. Introducing live percussion to his sets along with an infectious energy, he's on a mission to bring the sunshine back to Glasgow. We suggest you let it in...
Check out music from his own label Rememory Music here and his top5 tunes of the moment below:
1 DELROY EDWARDS – 4 CLUB USE ONLY (L.I.E.S.)
“This track is blowing my mind at the moment and for me it certainly fits its title perfectly. I can't wait to play it this Saturday - proper Deep House bizness and raw the way they like it.”
2 OSKIDO PRESENTS BLACK MOTION FT/ JAH RICH – BANANE MAVOKO (Tribe Records)
“I can't stop playing this track; it's just so funking funky! Sounds of Highlife, sound of South Africa to Glasgow. Some call it Afro-House and others Deep house but this is pure "Kwaito" from the townships.”
3 COLONEL ABRAMS – RELEASE THE TENSION (White Label)
“Heard this in a mixtape recently and it just reminds me that this sound has been around for a while and it will always sound relevant. I love it though, perfect house vocal with some funky bassline action.”
4 MIAOUX MIAOUX – HEY SOUND (AUNTIE FLO & ESA REMIX) (Chemikal Underground)
“Had the pleasure of remixing a great artist, Miaoux Miaoux from Glasgow with Auntie Flo and this is what we ended up with, wish it was out for summer as it's perfect summer vibes. It's out on 8th October from Rubadub and all respected vinyl outlets.”
5 XOSAR – RAINY DAY JUNO JAM (LEGOWELT MIX) (Rush Hour Recordings)
“Not sure who I fancy more, but both of them take me to places I've never been before. Two artists worth checking out if you've never heard of them as they’ll open you up to some interstellar techno space shit…”
Esa plays this Saturday at Subculture alongside Junior & Telford at the Sub Club
