Overview: Grimes At The Arches

OVERVIEW: Grimes At The Arches

If there’s one live act we’ve been looking forward to seeing more than anyone else this summer it has to be Grimes. Following on from her sold-out performance at The Berkeley Suite back in May, she returns tomorrow night at The Arches amid an explosion of quite justified hype.

Approaching her music with a refreshingly simplistic attitude, her introduction to electronic music could not have been more organic, using the guidance of a friend and Apple’s quintessential Garageband to craft her first forays into production. Some three years later and she’s just released third album ‘Visions’ on 4AD to critical acclaim. With whispers of ‘album of the year’ already circulating, Claire Boucher can be considered as one of 2012’s most intriguing artists, finding favour with all the usual suspects at Radio 1, while also inciting passionate support from her growing fanbase. Musically she escapes simple comparison or indeed influence, as off-kilter rhythms and eccentric basslines balance a striking vocal range which is at times astonishing. Weird, wonderful and superbly inventive, tracks like the dreamy ‘Genesis’ promote a depth and dexterity which captivate from the off. Unaffected by her peers, you’ll find Grimes mesmerising, empowering and most importantly, exciting.
