Review: Sub Club & Deadly Rhythm Pres. Hyperdub

REVIEW: Sub Club & Deadly Rhythm Pres. Hyperdub
WORDS: Laura Forsyth

If you were on the hunt for a quality night last Friday, 22 Jamaica Street was the only place to be. Joining forces with Deadly Rhythm, the Subclub proved to be the hottest ticket in town as one of Glasgow's most popular collectives hooked up with Kode9’s Hyperdub label for a full-scale takeover.

Although some nights may only get going around 12am, tonight the Sub Club was buzzing from the very start. Inkeeping with the name of the label, the crowd were on a seriously hype, something that became immediately obvious from the reaction to Deadly Rhythm resident Raksha. Energetically bopping behind the decks, one of Glasgow’s most promising new talents was clearly in the zone, showcasing some of his recent and forthcoming work for achingly hip local label High Sheen.

If you were able to peel yourself away for a cigarette on the bustling street above, it would only be momentary as Scratch DVA and LV’s dynamite sessions proved to be utterly irresistible on the Sub Club’s world-renowned soundsystem. With the bass verging on extreme there was no way of resisting the floor, as even if you weren’t dancing you'd find yourself unintentionally bouncing to the vibration of the speakers.

Kode 9 of course delivered on all levels, with a set which encapsulated the very essence of Hyperdub. Inducing clubbers into a trance like appreciation from the start, his positively captivating array of atmospheric bass and jacked up rhythm had the Sub Club on its knees and begging for more. After a few compulsory chants of ‘one more tune’, everyone was eventually ushered to leave, but with a friendly and up-for-it crowd and focus directed solely on the music, Deadly Rhythm and Hyperdub’s one night stand proved to be the ultimate payday blow-out.
