PREVIEW: The Glad Cafe Launch Parties W/ Rustie, Ben Butler & Mousepad & Cru Servers

Described as being a new home for creative and world music outside the mainstream, the arrival of the Glad Café in Shawlands has taken us a little by surprise. Located on Pollokshaws Rd, it looks set to put Glasgow’s often overlooked South Side on the map, with an opening weekend which is crammed full with some of the hottest names in leftfield electronica, 8-bit Indie and experimental pop. With Friday night setting the tone with a madcap mixture of fanatical-Folk and delicate synth work from the likes of Conquering Animal Sound, The One Ensemble and Jonnie Common, it is undoubtedly Saturday’s line up and a headline appearance from local hero Rustie which has got people frothing at the mouth.

Shooting into the wider conscience last year with his critically acclaimed debut album ‘Glass Swords’, Rustie has become one of the most exciting and inspiring names to invade the mainstream in recent memory. Delivering a sound which refuses to conform to any one genre, his vision can only be described as a sort of sonically charged funk which borrows from the past but soars into the future. Recent singles ‘Surph’ and ‘After Light’ have both found a home on daytime radio, indicating that his eccentric sound is perhaps not as farfetched as some would suggest. Infact, many have referred to it as the future sound of pop, using catchy hooks and euphoric synths to invigorate his audience. DJing this Saturday in such an intimate venue will no doubt be a special experience for all involved.

Providing support will be the ever-popular Ben Butler & Mousepad, who without laying it on too thick, is undoubtedly one of Glasgow’s most innovative artists, making music which is fun, frenetic and irresistibly off-kilter. Completing the bill will be brothers Jamie and Rickie McNeill aka Cru Servers, who with a sound described as ‘Relaxing Trance’ will set this party off just right…
