QUICKIE: Ben Martin's Top 5
The advent of new Glasgow label High Sheen has provided some standout moments for us this summer. Their debut collaborative release between Mia Dora, HaHaHa and Raksha shook us to the very core, while last month's ‘Romanticise EP’ from the aforementioned Mia Dora became something of a revelation, with a five star review in Mixmag and support from a plethora of industry big wigs. Holding it altogether however (along with label co-owner Sam Murray) is High Sheen resident Ben Martin, who has pushed the envelope with some truly incredible mixes and storming DJ sets over the last few months. Blending cutting edge House with just the right amount of Bass, his sound couldn’t be more on point, providing an irresistible mix of deep grooves and thundering drops. This Friday he supports the cosmically-charged Lone at the Sub Club, so what better time to find out what is burning his hard-drive:
1 MIA DORA – HYPNOTISE (High Sheen)
“The lead track from their Romanticise EP that is yet to cause anything but delirium in the club. It'd get all sorts of pull ups, if pull ups were cool. Which they're not.”
2 TREVINO - DERELICT (Naked Lunch)
“A Techno/House hybrid that ought to come packaged in emergency glass. It's so raw and insistent and the best thing that man Trevino has done so far. It picks up the pace and sets it from the moment it first drops.”
3. ANDRES – NEW FOR U (La Vida)
“Glacial, string-led House jam that sounds like it was knocked up in 20 minutes but deserves to be played for hours on end.”
4. BARNT - GEFFEN (Comemé)
“Slow-mo Techno that is so sparse yet sounds so full, especially on a system that treats it right. When those snare rolls hit you know it's time.”
5. GEEEMAN - BANG'T (Jack For Daze)
“Take a big kick drum, infectious organ riff, vocal hook about 'banging it' and repeat for 6 minutes. There's nothing more to add really. Time to bang't."
