PREVIEW: Set In Motion Launch Party W/ Hot Since 82
When it comes to deep, emotive House in 2012 there’s been one name which has crossed everyone’s lips. From Pete Tong to Joris Voorn, Visionquest to Hot Creations, Daley Padley has ignited the scene with a sound which is proving to be quite irresistible. Having been producing and DJing for over a decade, it’s perhaps no surprise that with his recent moniker as Hot Since 82 he has climbed the charts to become a one of the leading names in a new wave of genre defining talent. Releasing on such labels as Jaymo & Andy George’s Moda Black as well as Noir and Love Not Money, the past twelve months have been something of a revelation.
Unleashing his Hot Since 82 debut ‘Let It Ride’ last summer, Daley’s vast experience in the studio and the on the dancefloor alike have perhaps all lead to this point, using an expert knowledge to develop moments which resonate without compromise. Having already played and headlined the likes of Pacha and Ministry Of Sound prior to his most recent project, the Leeds-based producer seems to have found his ultimate calling in Hot Since 82, creating a sound, aesthetic and atmosphere which has been whole-heartedly adopted by Radio 1’s dance music fraternity and supported the world over.
And what about his productions? Apart from an instinctive groove which is almost impossible to ignore, you’ll find a submersive nature which at times is completely hypnotic. Comparable to coming up for air, tracks like ‘Sundown’ and his essential remix for Toky roll deep throughout, only to surface for a shimmering breakdown amid the flowing undercurrents. Making his Scottish debut at Saint Judes this Saturday for Set In Motion, you can expect his appearance to be nothing short of mesmerising.
Check out some of Hot Since 82's biggest releases below as well as an interview with the man himself:
Synth: So firstly could you tell us a little bit about how you got into production and what influenced your sound? We gather you've been producing and playing music for over ten years, what inspired Hot Since 82?
HS82: Ok so I’ve been playing for some time now, I discovered logic 5.5 on the P.C around 2004, maybe 2005, so I guess it started then. It’s any DJ’s dream to be playing a record that they produced. Hot since 82 was totally by accident! Or was it, I'm still in the dark about it myself. I guess it was my time to start something fresh for myself.
Synth: You're based in Leeds at the moment which has been hailed as one of the leading British cities for House. What's the scene really like down there; we've heard that like Glasgow there is a certain element of
over-kill?
HS82: Leeds is just amazing. It’s not just the nightlife that makes it such a wicked city but it’s the people that live here. From my point of view it’s the coolest city in the UK. I mean we have everything up here. Yeah there’s loads going on up here, and that’s the beauty of it all, its kinda like take your pick sort of thing. One club you can have Loco Dice on, the next you can have David Morales, it’s always on point.
Synth: House music seems to have really peaked over the last few years, and although some will argue it never went away, its popularity has undisputedly soared. What would you attribute that to?
HS82: Well I'm in my eyes it never went away, the best thing about House music right now is the revival of that classic
early 90’s house sound. Simple drums from old Roland drum machines, its just ace.
Hot Since 82: the girls agree
Synth: You'll be playing Set In Motion at Saint Judes this Saturday, how do your sets usually take shape? Do you venture into harder territory or keep it flowing and smooth throughout?
HS82: This is going to be my first time ever in Scotland so I'm pretty excited to say the least. I just play to the crowd the best I can. Of course I try to break and try new records, some work some don’t. Let’s see what happens but I'm definitely hyped to play here.
Synth: The support you've been getting from Radio 1 this year has been fairly prolific, and you of course had a recent release with Jaymo & Andy George's Moda label, what would you describe as the pivotal moments
in your career so far?
HS82: Firstly the lads have been amazing. Having Radio 1 airtime is just simply insane and more insane that I was asked to be part of their Moda Black label. When the lads got in touch the answer was yes, let’s put some music out there. I’m happy with the way everything went down with Moda, big things to come from them in the near future.
Synth: Finally, things seem to be going from strength to strength for you at the moment, what else have you got lined up over the rest of 2012? Your release schedule has been pretty non-stop; can we expect that to continue?
HS82: Yeah, I mean I just want to continue the way things have been so far and that’s producing cool records and remixing as much as I can. It’s pretty mental at the minute but loving every minute of it.
