Quickie: Catching Up With Mash

QUICKIE: Catching Up With Mash
It’s been a fairly exciting couple of weeks for Martyn Henderson aka Mash. His new single ‘Style Is The Answer’ has already sold out on vinyl, and fans of the quirky Deep House roller include everyone from Seth Troxler to Shlomi Aber, all giving glowing feedback of what is quickly becoming a summer sensation. Away from the studio, he’s also just landed the roll of House Editor at Mixmag and recently helped raise over £2000 for Yorkhill Children’s Foundation via a hugely successful night at the Sub Club. Announcing what would be his last show on Capital FM after some fifteen years of broadcast, we thought it would be a good time to catch up, look back and find out just what lies in store for the incredibly driven producer, presenter and DJ. Check out ‘Style Is The Answer’ below as well as our recent interview:
Synth: So it seems like its just been non-stop for you over the last few months or so, and you of course announced this week that you’d be presenting your final show on Capital FM this weekend – do you still intend on continuing with radio and how do you feel about moving on from the station?
Mash: Yeah it has been such a busy time! My show has been doing really well, but Capital is moving in a more R&B direction at the weekends and I don't fit in obviously. I have had a longer career in radio than most already, (15 years) and have really enjoyed my time there with Beat 106, XFM, Galaxy and more recently Capital. I have had loads of great guests on the show like Jamie Jones, Pet Shop Boys, Disclosure, Underworld, Mylo, Martyn, Jackmaster, MK, SBTRKT, Silicone Soul, Mr C, Murk, Herve, The Revenge, Goldie, Basement Jaxx, Pendulum, Slam etc... I don't think I've done my last radio show, put it that way!
Synth: There’s been a bit of a buzz surrounding your new single ‘Style Is The Answer’ which drops digitally next week on Glasgow Underground, were you expecting such a big reaction to it and how do your think your sound has developed in 2012?
Mash: Yeah, it’s had great reactions from a wide spectrum of DJs like Groove Armada, Seth Troxler, Francois K, Rob Da Bank, Mark E, Hernan Cattaneo, Graeme Park, Pete Herbert, Dualton, Pezzner, Harri and Sinden. That spans quite a few various styles which makes me happy that it is appealing to DJs from different sub-genres. I am delighted it has gone down so well, it is always the weirder tracks that seem to work better for me, I remember sitting on my single 'Somebody's Property' for ages as I thought it was a bit weird and thought people wouldn't like it. It went on to be my most successful track to date. I’m working on my debut album for Glasgow Underground which contains a few collaborations with people like The Revenge, Rob Etherson and Mia Dora. Not far away from finishing, I will keep you posted!
Synth: You’ve also just started work as the new House editor at Mixmag, how did that come about and what can we expect to see from you on a monthly basis? Ever considered reviewing your own music?
Mash: Yeah I do the House pages at Mixmag now, a magazine that I have read throughout my career and I’m delighted to be working for them. I have been writing for magazines like Clash, The List, Ministry and Vibe for years and got told about the vacancy at Mixmag. I put together a proposal and got the job. I wouldn't review my own releases as I wouldn't want to get accused of abusing my position. But there is a pull out poster in the next edition.
Synth: Finally, you’ve been out and about DJing a lot recently, notably at T In The Park and a very successful fundraiser at the Sub Club, how much are you enjoying DJing at the moment? Do you still get the same buzz as when you started?
Mash: People have asked me this before as I have been DJing for so long. Any time you get slightly jaded with DJing all it takes is one amazing track to come along and you can't wait to try it out! This happens frequently as there is so much great music out there, you just need to look! I dropped my new single at the Sub Club just there and it went down great which was an amazing feeling!
Mash - 'Style Is The Answer' is available now via Glasgow Underground. His final show on Capital FM broadcasts this 2-5am this Friday night/Saturday morning.
