Local Hero: Hudson Mohawke - Thunder Bay

LOCAL HERO:

OK, so we’re real late on this – sometimes even the hottest tracks can slip through the net – but better late than never right? Ross Birchard aka Hudson Mohawke is back and he’s not playing games. The lead track from forthcoming EP, ‘Satin Panthers’ sounds like Timbaland or The Neptunes had they not been sucked into a commercial abyss. With a bassline which bangs in your face like Westwood on a Saturday night, this is nothing short of genius from American RnB’s next go to guy.

On a similar tip, here is something fresh from ARM WTCHS FNGRS, who along with Peace, The Illest is carving his very own twisted Hip Hop flavour using chopped up vocal snippets and glitchy beats. Beginning with a hilarious sample of some misguided X Factor hopeful, the resulting drop comes as quite a surprise, leading into an addictive, futuristic bounce.

Get ready for the filth. Kid Robotik is bubbling under at the moment, waiting for just the right time to explode with his arsenal of bass-heavy bangers. The Subfriction resident has been putting out free downloads for a while now and here he puts a grime-ridden twist on the S-X heater, ‘Wooo Riddim’. Menacing, tense and utterly devastating on a big soundsystem, this is cocked and ready for Glasgow’s up and coming MC’s. Catch Kid Robotik at 520 this Friday for a Subfriction/All Caps special.

Let’s take it back, way back. We don’t hear a lot from Vitamins party-starter, Shaun Fae Solar on the production, but when he drops an edit like this we sit up and take notice. Perhaps risky messing with such a widely adored classic, but immediately embraced when done right, this bass-heavy refix drops the vocals for a rumbling sub and some serious South London swagger.
